Sir Francis Drake(1545-1596) was an English explorer who was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. He was also a slave-trader, privateer, mayor of Plymouth, and naval officer. His expedition around the world took three years to complete. Along with John Winter and Thomas Doughtry he circled the globe. They left Plymouth, England on December 13, 1577 and began heading toward Brazil and continued through the Strait of Magellan. When they reached Panama they pirated Spanish ships for food and treasure. When he reached North America, he claimed land for England. His exact location is not known but it is believed he was in northern California or even as far as Vancouver Island, Canada. They then continued across the Pacific Ocean and back to Plymouth, England. Upon his return the queen rewarded him with 10,000 euros. Later he began taking great part in the slave-trade organization.
