Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who discovered the New World. Columbus was born on October, 1451 in Genoa, Italy. He was looking for a direct water route west of Europe to Asia but never did. Instead, he had found what we call today "The United States of America". Columbus presented his plans to John II, who is the king of Portugal in 1485. John II proposed that the king equip three sturdy ships and give Columbus one year to said out into the Atlantic, and search for the western route to the Orient, and return to Spain. In 1493, which is the year he had returned, he gave a report that was warmly received by the royal court that he had found new land west of Europe.
Columbus convinced King Ferdinand that another voyage would bring great riches and wealth that he had promised. In 1502, Columbus went on his last journey, traveling along the eastern coast of Central America in an unsuccessful search for a route to the Indian Ocean. During the trip, a violent storm wrecked one of his ships standing the captain and his sailors in the island a Cuba. During their time on the island, the local islanders of Cuba got tired of the Spaniards poor treatment and obsession of gold, and had refused to give them food. Later, Columbus died on May 20, 1506 believing the he had still found a shorter route to Asia.
