Amerigo Vespucci(1454-1512) was an Italian explorer who sailed to the New World on Behalf of Spain. Vespucci sailed on about three voyages, his third being his most successful. On his third voyage he had discovered present day Rio de Janeiro in South America. Believing that he had found a new continent he thought he found the New World although it had already been found. In 1507 America had been named after him. Most of his expeditions were to present day South America. After his third voyage he had brought his findings back to a German cartographer who had his discoveries mapped out. There are accusations that Vespucci had made more voyages but this is not certain. Vespucci had began making several trips back to Brazil for various reasons with many different explorers and conquistadors.
